Casa Maguey

APTO Spotted by locals Casa maguey

Casa Maguey is a place loved by locals. It is a family business, they cook and manage the restaurant. So, most likely you will be host by a member of the family. The concept is simple but good. It has a Oaxacan rustic construction so you will have the experience of the food and the atmosphere of a Oaxacan restaurant. You will see how tortillas are made and how is their taste when they are just cooked which is an amazing experience for a tourist.

You also can see how they cook the meat which has an excellent taste. I recommend you to try “tasajo” or “arrachera”. I also recommend you “tlayudas” and memelitas which are a Oaxacan food trademark, you can also order “enchiladas” or “entomatadas” I am not a fan of entomatadas and enchiladas becasuse they can be a little bit spicy but my friends an family love them.

They also have sea food within their menú, it is not common for Oaxacan food restaurants to mix sea food with Oaxacan food but you will find that mix there. They also have stuff like hamburgers or wings which you shouldnt ask for because there are lots of Oaxacan great food that you should try first. Another recommendation is “plato botanero” which contains small portions of diverse Oaxacan food so you can try a Little bit of everything. You can also try “tacos de borrego” (sheep tacos) which are good as well. There is a long menu to choose from but this are my personal experiences. Another recommendation is “Caldo de Guias” which is an ancient Oaxacan soup.

Prices are very good considering food quality. If you go for breakfast you have to ask for “Chocolate the leche” it is oaxacan chocolate with milk and you can eat it with regional breed and the taste is amazing. We putt the breed in the chocolate before we eat it and it gives it a special taste which a will say it is amazing (although some people might find the action disgusting) but that is how we eat our chocolate with bread. You can also ask for “chocolate atole” which is a different variation and it also taste amazing.

The address is Avenida Ferrocarril #59, San sebastian tutla. If you are staying in the center you can ask for a taxi that will charge you around 50 pesos or you can take the bus, although I would reccomend you a taxi so you dont get loss if you are new in Oaxaca.

Bad things

  • They need more employees
  • Toilets could be a lot better
  • Because it is a family business they struggle when they have too many people so if you happen to go in one of those days probably you will have to wait a lot. Their service is not standardized, so sometimes your experience in terms of serving depends on who is the waiter serving your food, I have had very good experiences here but I know a friend that went there one day when there were lots of people and they delayed too much to bring his food and at the end it was cold.
